This hatchet is not bad, but also not great. It would be perfectly fine for the person who takes the family camping a time or two a year and that’s all they really need it for. However for someone who uses a hatchet more frequently, it is going to likely disappoint you. At least at first. Now don’t get me wrong, it’s a neat little all in one package with the hidden saw, ferro rod, and holster/carrying case. The saw was just fine. It cuts pretty good and quickly for it’s size. The rope cutter did just fine on paracord and small limbs. Plus you can never have too many Ferro rods and emergency whistles. The issues are only with the hatchet itself. It chops just fine and has a very even and sharp edge on it. However, for reasons that I’ll never understand, they decided to put a coating on the head that is pretty much truck bed liner! Probably to hide flaws in the metal. So when you are trying to split wood that rough coating is like putting the brakes on and it just sticks over and over and over! The coating was finally starting to wear down a little at the edge as I was using it, but it would take way too long to just wait on it to wear off. It would be best to just completely remove it if you ever want the thing to split decently. Now I do believe that it will be a pretty decent splitter given it’s head shape, though it is a little narrow, but only after that coating is gone. Other than that it’s a pretty good hatchet design. It has a good weight, the handle is easy enough to grip, and all that good stuff. It’s just that it is going to need some work to get it to it’s full potential. Given it’s all in one package and the stuff it comes with I would still recommend giving it a try though.
